Knowing your identity protects your heart and mind as you navigate life. What you believe shapes how you live, so identity must be rooted in God’s Word, which renews the mind, imparts wisdom, and equips believers for every assignment (2 Timothy 3).
Worldly identity—based on race, gender, nationality, class, and personal desires— is different from God-given identity, which is centered on Christ rather than self. True identity is not found in external labels but in being made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26–28).
Lets explore how God formed humanity:
- Body (bios)
- Soul (psuche)
- Spirit (pneuma/zoe — God’s own life breathed into us)
Because God breathed His life into humanity, His character can be expressed through us.
In the New Testament:
- Jesus is the exact image of God (Hebrews 1:3).
- Those who believe in Him are given the authority to become children of God—born not of human effort but of God (John 1).
- God delights to give us new birth through His Word (James 1:17-18).
- Jesus brings many sons and daughters into His glory, sharing His Father with us (Hebrews 2:10-11).
Your identity comes from being born of God, not from earthly categories or human definitions.
