  • Healing at the Well: The Story of Well of Grace Ministries

What does it truly mean to love someone well? For the counselors at Well of Grace Ministries, it means meeting women and girls exactly where they are—without judgment or finger-wagging—and walking alongside them through life's challenges.

Mary Andres, Allie Talbot, and Ellen Dutton share the remarkable 20-year journey of this Berrien County ministry with Rob Wolf of Wolf Financial Advisory that began as a residential facility for young women and evolved into a comprehensive outpatient counseling service now reaching over 500 individuals annually. Named after the biblical story of the woman at the well, their approach centers on creating safe spaces where healing can happen organically.

The counselors describe their three core programs with infectious passion. Club H2O serves teens 13-18, teaching boundary-setting and healthy self-image in 14 schools throughout the county. One powerful story involves a young girl who transformed from drawing herself as a "tin can wafting in the wind" to a firmly rooted tree—a visual representation of her growing stability and confidence. For adults, the OASIS program offers monthly group sessions on topics ranging from conflict resolution to creating beauty from life's broken pieces. Their DuPont program provides crucial consultation services for those battling eating disorders.

What sets Well of Grace apart is their holistic approach. Unlike traditional therapy settings, their center includes a kitchen where they've taught parentless teens to cook and a living room space where families work through conflicts in real-time. Every aspect of their work demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness to individual needs—a luxury not available in most clinical settings.

Despite their success, challenges remain. With counselors working only part-time and schools requesting more services than they can provide, the ministry faces growing pains. They hope to expand from serving 243 people in 2014 to reaching 1,000 annually within five years, but this requires additional resources and staff.

Ready to support this vital community resource? Visit their resale shop at 5707 Red Arrow Highway, volunteer, join their board, or make a financial contribution. Every dollar stays in Berrien County, helping create spaces where women and girls discover their worth and learn to thrive in community with others.
