Being frank and open to each other at work should theoretically be a no-brainer. Of course it will lead to top performance and high quality service if people can say what they think! Or will it? Candour turns out to be a highly sensitive subject.

Firstly it turns out that it is not so easy to be open with each other. And secondly, openness also has its dark and downsides.

Empowering your team and giving them autonomy is good. It increases motivation and engagement, and will improve performance especially when the context is complex and volatile. But not all employees respond well to having autonomy. And for managers the feeling of not being 'in control' lurks in the background.
