  • Episode 10: Ew, I hate (the) competition!
    Feb 20 2022

Hello and welcome to the final episode of speakeasy’s initial series! In this episode, we’re looking at tournaments/competitions/whatever your word for it is. We’re looking specifically at what they are, where to find them, the scoring system, and other key things to note for when you attend your first comp. This is mostly geared towards what it’s like to be in an in-person comp, but a lot of this is also relevant to online comps!

If you’re looking for the cheat sheet, it’s still the same steps. Head to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate, hit the first link to find the blog post for this episode, and you’ll find them there. On your way, you’ll also find the YouTube version of this podcast, if you want to watch Josef annotate the cheat sheet too.

Despite speakeasy the podcast ending (for now), we are looking to do some other series’ in the future, so be sure to let us know what episodes you might want. You can do that via Twitter (@speakeasydebate) or via any platform on our “Where to Find Us” page on our website. Speakeasy’s Twitter will also remain active, especially when it comes to posting debating motions!

  • Episode 9: Prep=Stonks
    Feb 6 2022

Hello and welcome back to speakeasy! This is the second to last episode in this initial series, and it’s on prep. Grace was not the one to edit this episode, because Garageband upset her greatly. If there’s any issues, we’re sorry. I guess you could say that we should’ve *prepped* a bit better.

To find our cheat sheets, it’s the same steps as always. Head to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate and click on “latest podcast.” From there, you’ll find the links to all the different versions of the cheat sheet (gridded, gridless, and Josef’s annotated version), as well as a link to the YouTube version, if you want to watch Josef annotate the cheat sheet or if you like subtitles!

If you guys have any questions, don’t forget to reach out! You can do so via Twitter or Facebook (speakeasydebate on both!) or via Google forms. As usual, you can also look around on our website for stuff like motions and debating resources!

  • Episode 8: It's POINT of interest not PERSON, you simp!
    Jan 30 2022

Hello and welcome to the 8th episode of speakeasy, where Josef talks all about Points of Interests. POIs, as we call them, are a critical part of BP debating that allows for diagonal engagement. It is (in Grace’s opinion, at least), one of the most difficult aspects of debating to follow, so be sure to listen carefully!

If you’re looking for this week’s cheat sheet, head to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate and click on “latest podcast.” That will send you to our website where you can find the cheat sheets and the YouTube version of this podcast (which has visuals and subtitles!).

While you’re on our website, did you know that we’ve started a blog series called ”Debate Thoughts”? Debate Thoughts is where Josef and Grace make blog posts on interesting (and often contemporary) debating things that aren’t quite big enough for their own podcast. You can find it on our menu! Earlier this week, Grace posted the first one—it’s on IA’s being paid less in order to maximise profits. You can keep up to date with these blog posts by following us on Twitter (@speakeasydebate). You can also ask questions and/or make suggestions by either Tweeting/DMing us on Twitter, Facebook, or by filling up our contact form. You can find all of those under ”where to find us” on our website.

  • Episode 7: "Your motions, you should know." -BP Yoda
    Jan 23 2022

Hello! After needing to cancel the last week’s episode release (sorry, Grace was quite sick), we are back to regular scheduled programming! In episode 7, we’re looking at the different motion types. Like Josef mentions in the episode, if there’s one cheat sheet you should download and print, it’s this one. Bring it with you to debating competitions until you memorize it yourself.

Speaking of the cheat sheets, they can be found on our website via linktr.ee/speakeasydebate. Just click on ”latest podcast” where you’ll find the links to all the different cheat sheet versions as well as the YouTube version of this podcast, should you (or a friend) be more of a visual learner or need subtitles. Here at speakeasy, we like to be as accessible as possible!

Like always, if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to shoot us a message either on Twitter or Facebook, where we’re both @speakeasydebate. We promise we don’t bite! We’re always happy to answer any questions you guys might have about a podcast or debating in general.

  • Episode 6: A whip is a man's best friend
    Jan 9 2022

Hello and welcome to the sixth episode of the speakeasy debating podcast! This episode is sort of like a part two of episode 5, with episode 5 covering the first half of the debate, and this one covering the second half (aka back half). With these two episodes, you'll know how to debate all eight available speaker positions (we hope!).

To find the cheat sheet, head to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate where, if you click "latest podcast," you'll be redirected to the appropriate blog post for this episode. While you're at our website, head to the new "resources" page, where you'll find the mentioned extension chart to figure out if your extension is indeed an extension. Also there is the accessible version of this podcast, which is via YouTube, as that version is complete with subtitles!

If you have any questions, don't forget to send us a message via Twitter or Facebook, where you can find us as @speakeasydebate! On the Twitter, we post helpful stuff and debating motions when the premier debating competitions are in session.

  • Episode 5: PMs and LOs and deputies, oh my!
    Jan 2 2022

Hello and welcome to the first speakeasy episode of the new year! We sincerely hope that everyone had a great and fulfilling holiday season, or at the very least, as great and fulfilling as this turbulent time in human history can be. In this episode, we cover the top-half (a.k.a. first-half or opening half) of a debate in BP--specifically the role fulfilment of the first four speakers. If you're in need of a refresher, that's Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in Opening Government and Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Opening Opposition (if you need a little more refreshment, head back to episode 1!). This episode also covers how to win from top-half!

In usual routine fashion, the cheat sheets for this episode can be found on our website. The easiest way to find this is by going to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate and clicking on "Latest Podcast." That'll take you to the corresponding blogpost for this episode, where you can find not only the cheat sheets, but also the YouTube version of this episode that has subtitles!

Also, did you know that you can bring in printed material to a BP debating competition, which means you can bring along the cheat sheets with you? No? Well, you better follow us on Twitter (@speakeasydebate) because we tweet some helpful information, as well as motions from debating competitions! You're also welcome to tweet or DM us questions via Twitter, Facebook, or via Google Forms. All links are in the linktree!

  • Episode 4: Persuasion, schmersuasion
    Dec 26 2021

Hi guys! Merry Christmas! Consider this our Christmas gift to you: it's episode 4, the longest episode to date! Episode 4 is on persuasion, i.e. the mechanics of how exactly to win a debate. From whom speakers are trying to convince to style and analysis, we think that this episode is one that even more intermediate debaters, and honestly, even more advanced ones can benefit from. Especially after getting a bit rusty this holiday season.

To find the cheat sheet, it's in the same place it's always been. Head to linktr.ee/speakeasydebate and click on "Latest Podcast." From there you can also find a link to the accessible version of this podcast, complete with subtitles!

Lastly, if you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback, don't be afraid to reach out on Twitter or Facebook (@speakeasydebate). We promise we don't bite! In fact, the change in annotation colour on the YouTube video/annotated cheat sheet was based off a suggestion!

We'll see you in the New Year--next Sunday at 12pm CET!
