Fra februar 1945 til Danmarks befrielse kom der omkring 250.000 tyske flygtninge til landet. De fleste kom med skib fra de østlige dele af Tyskland. Det var kvinder, børn og ældre mænd - mange var i en frygtelig forfatning, og dødstallet var højt. Danskerne ønskede ikke at hjælpe de slagne fjender. Den tyske besættelsesmagt måtte tage sig af dem. Samme dag Danmark blev frit, ændrede situationen sig drastisk.
