あくびの稽古の江戸っ子体験噺。端正な高座で知られる馬生が、ひょうひょうと演じてみせる｢季節のあくび｣の鮮やかさと、何ともいえない脱力感。これぞ落語の醍醐味。

『忠臣蔵』初日直前に判官役が急病となり芝居茶屋の倅･沢村淀五郎が抜擢されたが、四段目切腹の段で由良助役の市川団蔵が近寄ってこない。思いつめた淀五郎は、中村仲蔵のところにいとま乞いに行く．．。

左官の長兵衛はばくち好きで年も越せない。娘のお久が吉原の｢佐野槌」に身売りに行き、女将は長兵衛に五十両を貸す。吾妻橋で、五十両を盗られて身投げしようとしている若者に五十両をやってしまう。 三遊亭圓朝作の人情噺。筋の運び方は父･志ん生のを踏襲しながら、馬生はもっと人物描写を丁寧にして、人間を細かく描き出そうとしている。また、サラリとした一言で、すべてを描いてしまう持ち味を出している。

大変な粗忽者が浅草雷門のところで行き倒れを見て、｢兄弟分だ、今本人を連れてくる・・・」と言って、粗忽な友人を無理に引っぱってくる．．。 馬生は、死骸の番人を巧みに描くことで、独特の持ち味を出している。

船宿の二階で居候の若旦那･徳三郎がにわか船頭になって、大変な騒ぎを演じたあげくに浅瀬に乗り上げてしまう．．。 夏の有名な滑稽噺を、馬生は五代目古今亭志ん生のやり方を受け継いで演じている。
