Flo is sick of Tokyo. She is stuck in a rut, her translation work has dried up, and she's in a relationship that's run its course. That's until she stumbles upon a mysterious book left by a drunken passenger on the Tokyo Subway.

Peter is an odd duck, obsessed with logic and measurable facts, an obsession he puts to good use in his veterinary practice. When a murder is connected to the swine barn explosion and his friend Tom becomes the prime suspect, Peter feels compelled to put his reasoning skills, and his dog Pippin’s remarkable nose, to use to help clear him. The situation darkens with a second murder and a series of break-ins, including at Peter’s house and clinic, but Peter has a hard time knowing when he is out of his depth, despite warnings from his brother-in-law Kevin, an RCMP officer.

Next stop: a cat expo at a hotel just outside her hometown of Chadwick, NJ, where Cassie will give a grooming demo using shelter cats to encourage adoption. Her veterinarian boyfriend Mark will offer a program on cat care and health. The highlight of the expo will be a major cat show featuring pop sensation Jaki Natal. Almost as famous is her pet Gordie, a Scottish fold, who's become a hit on social media. But when Gordie goes missing and his sitter is found murdered, Jaki is having kittens.
