Un avvocato scompare senza lasciare traccia mentre trasporta un'ingente somma di denaro che non gli appartiene. Tutti pensano a un furto, e lo scandalo è grande. Poi, a distanza di tempo, l'avvocato riappare sull'espresso delle quattro e un quarto (da cui il titolo dell'opera) e, come se niente fosse, intrattiene il protagonista del libro con una interminabile chiacchierata.
