Julius, Sovereign Prince of Amidonia, resumes his tyrannical rule after retaking the city of Van. However, after experiencing freedom, the populace revolts, sparking uprisings throughout the Principality. By popular demand, Souma is returned to power in Van, and shortly thereafter, he annexes the entire nation as a part of the Kingdom of Friedonia. The Gran Chaos Empire, leader of the Mankind Declaration, cannot let this stand. But when Empress Maria presses Souma on the issue, he finally tells her of the contradiction in her ideals.

The ceremony that will turn Souma from provisional king to true monarch is rapidly approaching, and because Souma is to wed his fiancees on the same day, the capital is overflowing with excitement. Not overflowing enough for Souma, though, who uses his own marriage as an excuse to push his retainers to confess to their beloveds and tie the knot, too. Admirable as the king's motives are, can the kingdom really handle all this romance, all at once?

When Souma receives an invitation to a martial arts tournament, he has no plan to attend until he discovers two things: first, the grand prize is a single wish, and second, the daughter of his kingdom's former general will be participating. After encountering Ange in Gaun, the Country of Beastkin and learning of the existence of the Apostles, Kelvin, the battle junkie Summoner from another world, and his companions decide to visit the Holy Empire of Deramis. There, they are granted an audience with Pope Philip, who offers them information on Iris, the alleged leader of the Apostles, and Serge, a Hero from lore. Just then, the famous Heroes of the current age happen to return from their own journey to the Western Continent.

After a long and perilous journey to the Earth Navel, Belgrieve finally succeeds in locating the second of his missing comrades. The dangers of the road are a fresh reminder of Belgrieve's limitations, and he begins to doubt his ability to continue his quest. But with the support of his daughter and friends, he finally manages to reconcile with his old party member Percival. Resolved to see things through to the end, they continue their journey to find the elf Satie, the last member of Belgrieve's old party.

Belgrieve's return to Turnera has been marked by many brushes with larger-than-life figures, including a legendary adventurer, an elven princess, and a mysterious foundling with mystical powers. In the midst of all of this, Belgrieve is forced to confront unresolved old feelings about his past that have smoldered within him since his adventuring days came to an end so long ago. Meanwhile, after resuming her adventuring life in the big city, Angeline has done her father the dubious service of seeking out prospective brides for him (to no avail).
