The Punic Wars (264-146 B.C.) were a series of conflicts between the rapidly expanding Roman Republic and the Phoenician Sea empire, Carthage. Both sides expended enormous resources assembling armies and building and rebuilding fleets. Hannibal crossed the Alps and the Romans, for the first time, confronted war elephants. The struggle featured heroic personalities, brilliant battles, terrible sieges, cruelty, craft, and for Carthage, devastation and ruin. (Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.)

Story0
Ukiyo-ye prepared Japan for intercourse with other nations by developing in the common people an interest in other countries, in science and foreign culture, and by promoting the desire to travel, through the means of illustrated books of varied scenes. To Ukiyo-ye, the Japanese owed the gradual expansion of international consciousness, which culminated in the revolution of 1868,—a revolution, the most astonishing in history, accomplished as if by miracle; but the esoteric germ of this seemingly spontaneous growth of Meiji lay in the atelier of the artists of Ukiyo-ye. Shakuntala

Story0
Ryder originally did a close to literal translation of this 4th or 5th century play by the poet Kalidasa. Quite unwieldly with 7 acts and over 40 characters. "This version of Shakuntala represents an earnest effort to adapt for modern purposes one of the world's dramatic masterpieces. Since Shakuntala is a true masterpiece, its spirit is thoroughly modern, in spite of the fifteen centuries that have passed since its first presentation in India. [Except for some minor changes described herein,] the matter of the play is that of Kalidasa's Shakuntala with a minimum of verbal alteration." - ...

In this volume I have tried to meet the wishes of the publishers, by explaining to those who are comparatively unfamiliar with classical antiquity the place which Caesar occupies in the history of the world. He was not the founder, much less was he the organizer of the Roman Empire; yet his life marks a great change in European History. - Summary Adapted from the Preface

Minot's Ledge lies off the coast of Cohasset and Scituate, Massachusetts. This ledge and neighboring rock outcrops were the scene of over 40 shipwrecks in the early and mid-1800s. The first lighthouse built on Minot's Ledge was an iron pile design—a spidery construction drilled with difficulty into the ledge. This first lighthouse was destroyed by a storm in under two years, killing two lighthouse keepers. The second, and current, lighthouse was built over five years, completed in 1860, and remains in service today. This book covers the marine history of the rocky coast, the tragedy of the ...
