Utilizando el marco de esa cierta tristeza que el otoño representa y que a él también le invade, el marqués de Bradomín se dirige a un pazo, casa típica gallega, en la que está muriendo Concha, mujer a la que amó en el pasado. Ella sigue enamorada de él en el presente. El sentimiento de melancolía que evoca el otoño es el mismo de ese amor pasado que se recuerda de forma idealizada, sin reparar en los sufrimientos que produjo, que se han diluido con el paso del tiempo.
