While recovering from a brutal beating, Atticus Riot is arrested for the murder of his ex-agent-the same agent who left Riot for dead. His wife and partner, Isobel Amsel, watches helplessly as he's taken to San Francisco's notorious "sweat box" for interrogation by an inspector with a grudge.

Jesse O’Hara is unemployed. “A million dollar brain and a ten-cent personality,” her last employer said. With nothing better to do, Jesse accepts a request to go to Ireland to help a relative find his missing daughter. She expects to find the young woman quickly, and is looking forward to spending her trip touring and drinking, not necessarily in that order. Once in Ireland, it’s clear to Jesse that the missing woman has met with foul play.

A dying woman confesses a terrible secret to her priest along with a cryptic list of nine names. Before he is able to uncover anything more, the priest is struck dead in the fog and the police discover the list in his shoe. Our hero Mark Easterbrook, a historian, learns of a secretive organisation known as The Pale Horse and of their supernatural connections in the village of Much Deeping. The list of names seems to foretell the deaths of several people and Mark must piece together the clues and unearth the connections between them all.

In "The Grandfather", a perfectly ordinary grandfather feeds his perfectly ordinary cat, waiting for his perfectly happy family to arrive for a perfectly pleasant afternoon… until an unfortunate revelation puts them all on a tragic path, if the grandfather can’t unravel their perfect mess first.
