Set on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, the plot follows William Legrand, who was recently bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant Jupiter fears Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure.

Im Mittelpunkt der Erzählung steht ein Säufer namens "Old Bugs" im Jahr 1950, der in einer Kneipe Chicagos als Putzkraft arbeitet. Wer er wirklich ist und was er in seinem früheren Leben gewesen war, weiß man nicht. Aus seinem alten Leben hat er nur noch das Foto einer edel aussehenden Frau, über die er jedoch nicht reden möchte.

Legrand se ha ido a vivir a la Isla de Sullivan y allí se dedica a sus actividades favoritas: la lectura y la búsqueda de nuevas especies de insectos, junto con su inseparable criado, Júpiter. El día que fuí a visitarle estaba muy alterado porque acababa de descubrir una especie que parecía completamente desconocida, era un escarabajo que parecía de ..oro Júpiter, que como todos los negros era muy supersticioso, no quería saber nada del "ecarabajo"..... pero su patrón nos iba a embarcar en una aventura , que ninguno de nosotros se podía imaginar.
