Gendering the GOP

Story0
Developing a novel theory of "partisan-gender identity," Gendering the GOP argues that Republican women in Congress are not merely gender-blind partisans. In fact, polarization and party competition have incentivized Republican women to organize around their partisan-gender identity and distinguish themselves from both Democratic women and Republican men. In so doing, Republican congresswomen have increased their visibility while simultaneously upholding a party culture that limits women's presence and power in the institution.

Story0
It is easy to conclude that the U.S. Congress, deeply partisan and paralyzed by gridlock, is simply incapable of playing a constructive role in matters of war and peace. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and indeed, it wasn’t always. From the late 1960s to the early 1990s, Congress weighed in responsibly on conflicts in Southeast Asia, Central America, the Middle East, and southern Africa. Now is the perfect time for congressional leaders to breathe new life into an essential component of American democracy.

In the third chapter of Macaulays monumental History of England from the Accession of James II, we delve into the fascinating state of the nation in 1685. Macaulay examines various aspects of life during this period, including the population, revenue, military organization, transportation networks, and the bustling cities‚most notably London, with its vibrant coffee houses and pioneering street lighting initiatives. While this chapter offers a refreshing shift from Macaulays usual political focus, he still skillfully weaves in political intrigue, ensuring that the narrative remains engaging ...

Riding With Rodney is all the stories that make up real life for Arkansans in the First Congressional District, shared through podcast discussions with “regular people”; through interactive events like live podcast tapings doubling as town halls with the candidate; and through dash-cam video of guided tours of towns in every county, each with a local storyteller ...

When Congress Gets Mad

Story0
The scholar Edward Corwin famously described the separation of powers between the executive and the legislative branches set out in the US Constitution as “an invitation to struggle for the privilege of directing American foreign policy.” With different parties controlling different branches of government, partisan politics tends to intensify this struggle, and the consequences can be ugly. A look back at the earlier strife offers useful context for evaluating today’s bitter divisions and their likely outcome. The main takeaway is not comforting to contemporary Republicans: trying to fight a no-holds-barred war over foreign policy against a determined White House can limit the effectiveness of US efforts abroad and discredit those who launch what can come to be seen as obstructionist assaults.
