Political races in the United States rely heavily on highly paid political consultants who carefully curate the images of politicians, advise candidates on polling and analytics, and shape voters' perceptions through marketing and advertising techniques. More than half of the $6 billion spent in the 2012 election went to consultants who controlled virtually every aspect of the campaigns, from polling, fundraising, and media to more novel techniques of social media and micro-targeting.

In today’s chaotic world, where the multiplication of information sources creates competing narratives, credibility is the key to winning the war of ideas. This is the reason why governments and corporations resort to astroturfing - creation of ostensibly grassroots movements set up to advance political agendas and commercial campaigns. The democratization of information and polarization of politics offer a perfect storm.

Story0
On February 1, 2016, the date of the Iowa caucus, David Breskin began a project that would carry him through the American presidential election. An ex-journalist, Breskin set out to "cover" this most strange and historic election, under the pressure of a reporter's daily deadline, by writing one poem a day. He created a deliberately awkward, rollickingly restrictive form - seven beats per line, 11 lines per poem - and, noting our preference for the convenience of sound-bite news and junk-food polls over more nutritious fare, called them "7-11s".

Historic levels of polarization, a disaffected and frustrated electorate, and widespread distrust of government, the news media, and traditional political leadership set the stage in 2016 for an unexpected, unlikely, and unprecedented presidential contest. Donald Trump’s campaign speeches and other rhetoric seemed on the surface to be simplistic, repetitive, and disorganized to many. As Demagogue for President shows, Trump’s campaign strategy was anything but simple.

The imminent completion of this airfield posed a significant threat, potentially enabling a renewed Japanese offensive that could jeopardize the vital lifeline of American support to Australia and New Zealand. The battle of Okinawa, a grueling three-month conflict spanning a 700-mile stretch from Formosa to Kyushu, involved over a million combatants, including Americans, Japanese, British, and native Okinawans. This monumental clash was not only the largest but also the most costly single operation of the Pacific War, rivaling the Normandy invasion that had occurred just months earlier. Throughout its 82 days of intense combat, the battle claimed an average of 3,000 lives daily—both from the fighting forces and tragic non-combatants. (Joseph H. Alexander)

Story0
As the tide turned in the Korean War, UN leaders faced critical questions about the future of the conflict. The dynamic ROK leader made it clear he had no intention of reverting to the pre-invasion status quo, aiming instead to unify Korea by advancing to the Manchurian border. With the Communists violation of the 38th Parallel, this arbitrary line—originally a division between Soviet and American occupation zones—was rendered meaningless. On September 26, CINCUNC tasked the Joint Special Plans and Operations Group (JSPOG) with creating a strategy for operations beyond the border. The ...
