It is 1980, and the Democratic People's Republic of Laos is proud to be competing in its first-ever Olympics. Ex-national coroner of Laos Dr. Siri Paiboun may be retired, but he and his wife, Madame Daeng, would do just about anything to have a chance to visit Moscow, so Siri finagles them the job of medical oversight for the Olympians. As the competition heats up, however, Siri begins to suspect that one of the athletes is not who he says he is. Then another Lao Olympian is accused of murder.

Sheriff Cliff Lansing is a single father, a part-time rancher, and an overworked lawman suddenly faced with a serial killing spree. A madman is moving through San Phillipe County on New Mexico's Continental Divide, leaving an owl feather by each of his ritually mutilated victims. While Lansing first suspects that Apache tribal politics lie behind the killings, he cannot ignore a troubled boy who claims to see the murders in his sleep, and then leads Lansing to the bodies. Suddenly, the sheriff is plunged into a bizarre world of Native American legend and magic.

On the first warm day of spring, in a seemingly unprovoked attack, a young mother is stabbed. At the same time, her five-year-old daughter is snatched. As part of the Violent Crimes Taskforce, DI Erica Swift and her team are assigned with finding the person responsible for the stabbing and to locate the missing child. But as Erica digs deeper, she uncovers a disturbing motive behind the attack. When another child is taken and with time running out, she needs to solve the case before many more lives are lost.
