Along with their chums, they encounter a number of colorful characters as well as natural impediments in their quest. There is the crook who tried to steal one of their motorcycles, and a strange older man who tells the tallest tales they’ve ever heard. Between having their supplies stolen, Frank falling into a pit, and trying to survive in the caves, there is plenty of adventure in this exciting chapter in the lives of The Hardy Boys!

When a brilliant young professor mysteriously disappears, Frank and Joe Hardy find themselves thrown into one of their most thrilling cases yet. From the lively halls of Kenworthy College to the eerie depths of the Honeycomb Caves, the brothers follow a trail of cryptic clues that begins with a strange message scrawled on an exam paper. But nothing could prepare them for the dangers that lie ahead. As they explore the rugged caverns along the windswept coastline, the Hardy boys stumble upon a hidden searchlight whose powerful beam reveals a startling discovery.

At their home in Bayport Frank, Joe, and Fenton, receive a visitor who informs them that Professor Morgan Todd from Kenworthy College has disappeared. At the time Fenton is working on security for a coastal radar station, which is under construction. The boys visit the college and are informed that the professor is away in Europe. However, the boys become suspicious, and their investigations lead them to Honeycomb Caves in Rockaway, where they uncover a plot to disrupt the operation of the radar station.

While enjoying a summer day boating on Barmet Bay, Frank and Joe end up saving Mary Todd from downing. She was on her way to see their father, Fenton Hardy about the mysterious disappearance of her brother. While Fenton Hardy went to search for him, Frank and Joe discovered a few small details about the missing professor. Fenton Hardy returned after his unsuccessful search as the boys were heading to a camping trip with Chet and Biff to Honeycomb Caves.

A late night hunting trip for the Sugar Creek Gang leads to a surprising discovery. Later, Old Man Paddler invites them to his cabin for a sassafras tea pary. An urgent knock on the door interrupts the party. Soon, they find themselves knee-deep in a quicksand rescue.
