Charles Perrault nació en París el 12 enero de 1628, junto a su hermano gemelo, en el seno de una familia perteneciente a la alta burguesía. Participó en la creación de la Academia de las Ciencias y en la restauración de la Academia de Pintura. Desde 1663, fue secretario de la Academia Francesa.
