Cleo beschließt mit ihren Freundinnen Emma und Rikky tauchen zu gehen. Während ihres Ausflugs gelangen sie zufällig in eine Grotte auf Mako Island – und verwandeln sich dort in Meerjungfrauen. Von da an werden sie jedes Mal zu Meerjungfrauen, wenn sie mit Wasser in Berührung kommen. Erst, wenn sie trocknen, werden sie wieder zu Menschen. Natürlich verändert sich das Leben der drei dadurch enorm.

Theo und Henry stoßen im Tal der Könige auf die Figur einer Katze, die Theo mitnimmt und später Ra nennt, und ein Schutz-Amulett: das Horusauge. Theo erkennt darin sofort die geheimnisvolle Magie, mit denen bestimmte Objekte im Alten Ägypten aufgeladen wurden. Als sie das Horusauge berührt, erscheint ihr eine königlich anmutende Frau.

Die Kinder entkommen der Schlange durch ein Kellerloch. Theo kann vorher noch ein Buch mit Zaubersprüchen gegen Flüche an sich bringen. Für die Aktion gibt es allerdings Strafarbeiten. Theo und Henry werden auf ihr Zimmer geschickt und sollen Clive helfen, Uschebtis zu verpacken, die als Leihgabe ans Britische Museum gehen sollen.
