The Scopes trial, over the right to teach evolution in public schools, reaffirmed the importance of intellectual freedom as codified in the Bill of Rights. The trial, in a small-town Tennessee courtroom in 1925, set the stage for ongoing national debates over the separation of church and state in a democratic society - debates that continue to this day.

Frank Forrester Church III (July 25, 1924 to April 7, 1984) was an American Democrat politician and lawyer. Church served as a U.S. Senator from Idaho from 1957 to 1981, and gained national prominence as chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, from 1975 through 1976, commonly known as the Church Committee, which conducted extensive hearings investigating extra-legal FBI and CIA intelligence-gathering and covert operations.
