In late 1936, as Franco’s armies stormed toward Madrid, Stalin famously termed the defence of Spain “the common cause of all advanced and progressive mankind.” As a German emigrant to Winnipeg, Hans Ibing recognized the importance of the Spanish Civil War to the struggle against worldwide fascism in a way that most people in Canada did not - joining the International Brigades in their fight to defend the Spanish Republic was his “chance to fight Hitler.”

En unos tiempos en que ha vuelto a hacer acto de presencia una profunda crispación política, y a solo una década de que España conmemore el inicio del mayor drama de nuestra historia contemporánea, la pregunta sobre qué queremos hacer con el recuerdo de la Guerra Civil no sólo es pertinente sino especialmente relevante. Este ensayo ha sido concebido con un triple objetivo. Primero, fomentar un debate social respecto no sólo a un pasado cada vez más remoto, sino a un futuro en el que definitivamente la negra sombra de la Guerra Civil pueda desaparecer.

As white supremacy, ultra-nationalism, rabid misogyny, and anti-immigrant fervor coalesce, a new and uniquely American form of fascism looms. Could our current moment actually bring about the end of democracy in the United States? Are Americans willing to surrender their freedom and dignity, along with their ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and mutual respect in the face of the rising tide of political and ideological extremism?
