1938. In the turmoil of pre-war Italy, a painting is stowed in the false bottom of a suitcase, ready to be carried across the border. But as the train draws to a violent halt and armed officers lead the passengers onto the platform, the suitcase is taken and the painting never seen again. 1963. London is on the cusp of change in the swinging 60s. Nightclubs and exclusive parties are in their heyday. Die beiden jungen Frauen schlagen sich bis nach Hamburg durch, in der Hoffnung, dort Arbeit zu finden. Aber die Stadt liegt in Trümmern, und die Briten haben einen Zuzugsstopp verhängt - an eine Unterkunft und Essensmarken kommen sie nur noch über den Schwarzmarkt.

Ce livre audio dit la misère, la faim, la fuite, les exactions vues par les yeux d'un enfant, puis l'interminable voyage dans le train qui l'emmène dans un camp. Ce récit est écrit comme il a été vécu: avec les tripes, par un gamin de la guerre qu'on a amputé de sa jeunesse. C'est aujourd'hui un classique étudié dans des écoles.
