Round about the second anniversary of the start of World War 1, Roger Waterlow is still stuck ashore in charge of the ramshackle British naval intelligence effort in a sweltering notionally "neutral" country in South-eastern Europe. As rumor follows rumor and the situation becomes daily more confused, Waterlow and his organisation learn of three couriers trying to carry correspondence to Berlin—correspondence that might give the Entente powers vital insights into German intentions for the region, if only they can be intercepted and their papers seized....

Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969) was an English novelist who was a bestseller in the mid-20th century. She published eighteen highly acclaimed works of fiction in her lifetime, inspired by her own tragic experiences of family life. Her works consist mainly of dialogue and focus on family life among the late Victorian or Edwardian upper middle class. They deal with money, power, status, incest, adultery, murder, homosexuality – about which she was years ahead of her time – and all the passions and stresses of family life, described with brilliant wit and perception.

My undead hangman character has to tread a razor's edge, with only the support of his fellow players preventing his imminent plunge into the abyss. But are they who they claim they are?
