The Barkley family—Steve, Emily, Nim, and Bastian—meet Bruno, a German Shepherd who has a wild tale to tell about rescuing people from a burning building. Unfortunately, he was separated from his human during the fire, and now he's looking for him. The family and the shepherd combine their wits and talents to look for the missing human.

Now that the Barkley family has decided to start their new company, The Wizard of Dogs, they begin to plan how to help the dogs in their community. One idea is to teach humans and dogs how to communicate, but they know that goal will require a lot of work. While they are talking, Steve gets a frantic phone call from Dr. MacDonald. Sherlock the border collie is missing. When they race to her house to look for him, an exciting rescue begins, but it’s a far more dangerous rescue than they expected.

Sherlock the Border Collie asks Steve Barkley and his family to help him figure out who is stealing from his human, Dr. Chloe MacDonald, an inventor who is staying at a nursing home. One of her inventions is a dog dictionary attached to Sherlock’s collar that allows him to add to his huge vocabulary. It even translates unusual languages, including cat.

When an important visitor turns up at school one day, Lenny and his friends are surprised to find themselves sent to the back field to count the footballs and tidy up the bibs. The school dog, Crumbs, has been sent there too. He's quite a lively dog and prone to over-enthusiasm. Suddenly they realise it's all a ruse to keep them away from the guest! Furious, and not a little hurt, our heroes rush into school, demanding answers and an apology.
