Edith L. Cavell (1865–1915) was a courageous British nurse who served during World War I, caring for soldiers from both the Allied and German sides. Her remarkable bravery led her to assist around 200 Allied soldiers in escaping from German-occupied Belgium, an act for which she was arrested, court-martialed, and ultimately sentenced to death for treason. Despite efforts to appeal her sentence, she was executed by a German firing squad just hours after the verdict was announced, sparking global sorrow and outrage. The murder of Edith Cavell is second only to the sinking of the Lusitania for events that outraged and encouraged America to become involved in the First World War. Edith a nurse, volunteered to run a hospital in Belgium behind the German front line. There she ran the medical facilities and offered care and treatment to all that came, including wounded German soldiers. In 1915 the German military authorities arrested Miss Cavell in the middle of the night and she simply disappeared.
