The call comes early in the morning. David and Helen Tremaine have discovered a body buried in the grounds of their large Victorian manor house, Llys Faen Hall, just north of Cardiff. DI Jemima Huxley and her partner, DS Dan Broadbent, race to the scene to discover that a second body has been unearthed in a shallow woodland grave. And the forensic team working the site believe this is just the start. Jemima knows this is the biggest case of her career. But it couldn't have come at a worse time.

The call comes through on DI Jemima Huxley's day off. A family of five brutally attacked in their own home. Bradley and Sally Rathbone and their teenage niece and nephew are dead. Only fourteen-year-old Millie survives, found in a broken heap at the bottom of the stairs. It's an unlikely crime scene: a comfortable five-bedroom property in one of Cardiff's most exclusive suburbs. Jemima quickly deduces this was no random burglary gone wrong. These killings were vicious, personal — and carefully planned. But why would someone target an ordinary family going about their everyday business?
