Some are ancient, as enduring as the forests and mountains they inhabit. Others live among us, in our cities, creating new legends as they scuttle through the shadows. And none of them are to be trusted.

England, 1893. Chief Inspector Roderick Langham of Scotland Yard is asked to investigate the discovery of a Russian cargo schooner whose crew has vanished except for its captain, who is found dead, tied to the ship's wheel. The captain's log speaks of strange cargo aboard and the crew members disappearing one after another.

As he follows and observes an arms smuggling operation while on undercover assignment for Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Roderick Langham encounters Holmes and Watson from a distance at the village inn. The morning after taking the tour of an archeological dig with the talkative professor Edford, the pedant is found shot dead at the site and the Baker Street duo are on the scene.
