In August 1913, the Karluk, flagship of Vilhjalmar Stefansson’s Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–16, became trapped in the ice while sailing to Herschel Island near the northern Alaska/Yukon border. After drifting across the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, in January 1914 the ship was crushed by the ice and sank.
