What happened to Recep Tayyip Erdogan? The Turkish president came to power in 2003 promising economic and political liberalization. But under his rule, Turkey has instead moved in a profoundly illiberal, authoritarian direction - although not toward repressive Islamism, which some feared was Erdogan’s true agenda. Rather, Erdogan has become something more akin to a traditional Middle Eastern strongman: consolidating personal power, purging rivals, and suppressing dissent.

The 2023 race for turkish presidency is the closest one in years. It will shape Turkey's future for the following years. The generation most affected by this is the young one: Having grown up under the rule of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, they know no other government than his AKP. For the first time in their lives, this might actually change. In four episodes, we shed light on what moves this generation. Meeting activists, students and social researchers, we talk about how Generation Erdoğan feels about the tense economic and political situation in Turkey and how they strive for change.

Turkey’s military leaders rarely make public appearances at political events. But on August 7, General Hulusi Akar, the country’s chief of staff, appeared in uniform before a rally of more than a million people in Istanbul, alongside President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, and the leaders of the Turkish opposition. Through numerous interruptions for applause, Akar thanked Turkey’s civilians for helping to quash July’s coup attempt.

Erdogan recently declared that, starting immediately, Turkish students would begin studying the Ottoman language in school. But for anyone who has ever struggled to learn the notoriously difficult Ottoman language - sometimes described as a practical joke played on historians - forcing it on a generation of schoolchildren might be the quickest way for Erdogan to destroy his popularity (and the Ottoman Empire's as well).
