Nach langem Warten bekommt ein König endlich eine Tochter. Aus Freude darüber lädt er seine Untertanen zu einem Fest, darunter auch zwölf weise Frauen (Feen). Die dreizehnte, die aus Mangel an Geschirr nicht zur Taufe der neugeborenen Königstochter eingeladen worden war, belegt das Mädchen mit einem Fluch, dass es sich an seinem fünfzehnten Geburtstag an einer Spindel stechen und daran sterben solle, woraufhin der König alle Spindeln im Königreich verbrennen lässt. Eine der zwölf übrigen Feen, die an dem Fest teilnehmen durften, wandelt den Todesfluch aber in einen hundertjährigen Schlaf um.

Ein Königspaar bekommt endlich ein Kind. Zur Taufe sollen sieben Feen der Tochter Gaben wie Schönheit und dergleichen verleihen.
