Dans la forêt de Bellécorce, au creux du chêne où Archibald Renard tient sa librairie, chaque animal qui le souhaite peut déposer le livre qu'il a écrit et espérer qu'il soit un jour acheté. Depuis que ses souvenirs le fuient, Ferdinand Taupe cherche désespérément à retrouver l'ouvrage qu'il a écrit pour compiler ses mémoires, afin de se rappeler les choses qu'il a faites et les gens qu'il a aimés. Il en existe un seul exemplaire, déposé à la librairie il y a des années.

L'hiver et son manteau se sont posés sur la forêt, et le jeune Bartholomé Renard ne saurait être plus impatient : dans quelques jours, ses parents, Pimprenelle et Séraphin, reviendront de leur périple dans le Grand Nord pour les festivités de Yule ! Mais, une fois sur le quai de la gare et la foule dispersée, nulle trace du couple d'explorateurs.
