Zu seinem 10. Geburtstag geht Jan mit seinen Eltern in einen großen Zirkus. Am Tag vor der Show schleicht er sich zu den Tieren und begegnet dort der gleichaltrigen Maya, der Tochter des Zirkusdirektors. Sie zeigt ihm, dass und wie sich Kinder mit Tieren unterhalten können: Durch Singen. Bei der großen Show im vollen Zirkuszelt wird Jan vor allen in den Clownnummern klar, dass die Tiere lächerlich gemacht werden. Die Tiere drücken ihren Protest aus. Jan kann sie gut verstehen.
