Um einen möglichst dauerhaften Frieden zu erreichen, beschließt man in Washington, mit den Häuptlingen der Powder-River-Region weitere Friedensverhandlungen zu führen. General William T. Sherman will diesen Frieden notfalls mit Gewalt durchsetzen. Aber Red Cloud lehnt sämtliche Friedensangebote ab und führt mit seinem Stamm weiter Krieg gegen jeden, der sein Land durchquert. Dies betrifft auch einen Wagenzug mit Abenteurern, die trotz der Gefahren Virginia City erreichen wollen.

Der Winter des Jahres 1866 hat den Oglala-Sioux einen ersten Erfolg im Kampf gegen die Blauröcke gebracht. Nach dem Fetterman-Massaker ist es im Frühjahr 1867 still geworden am Bozeman Trail. Auch die vielen Goldsucher, die noch im Jahr davor zu Tausenden durch das Sioux-Land nach Montana gezogen sind, warten erst einmal ab. Sie wollen ihr Leben nicht riskieren. Darin sieht der Oglala-Häuptling Red Cloud eine weitere Chance. Erneut richtet sich sein Zorn gegen die verhassten Blauröcke Sein Ziel ist jedoch nicht direkt Fort Phil Kearny, sondern ein befestigtes Holzfällerlager einige Meilen außerhalb.

Nolan Dobbs und seine Kumpane sind nach Denver gekommen. Sie haben gehört, dass die Menschen im Colorado-Territorium Geld für jeden Skalp eines getöteten Sioux oder Cheyenne bezahlen. Dobbs verspricht den Leuten in Denver, dass er mit seinen Männern diesen blutigen Job gut und schnell erledigen wird. Sie töten bald darauf die ersten Indianer und erbeuten deren Skalpe. Aber schon bald werden sie entdeckt und fliehen nach Fort C. F. Smith. Jetzt glauben Dobbs und seine Kumpane, erst einmal in Sicherheit zu sein. Sie haben sich jedoch gründlich getäuscht.

Die Oglala-Sioux haben Seamus Donegan und seine beiden Söhne überfallen. Amos und Ben sind tot, ihr Vater überlebt. Verletzt und skalpiert gelingt ihm die Flucht. Donegan will den Tod seiner Söhne rächen. Auf seinem Weg der Rache hinterlässt er bei jedem getöteten Oglala-Sioux ein blutiges Kreuz auf der Stirn. Er wird zum gnadenlosen Killer, der kein Erbarmen kennt. Die Indianer fürchten ihn. Donegan geht seinen Weg unerbittlich weiter, der ihn zu einem Deserteur aus Fort Connor führt und in dem von Oglala-Sioux belagerten Fort endet, dessen Besatzung kaum noch Lebensmittelvorräte besitzt.

Im Juni 1866 finden Friedensverhandlungen in Fort Laramie statt. Eine Delegation aus Washington ist angereist, um die Sioux und Cheyenne davon zu überzeugen, dass sie die Goldsucher auf deren Weg nach Montana nicht angreifen sollen. Die Verhandlungen erweisen sich als schwierig und führen wenig später zu blutigen Auseinandersetzungen.

Als Colonel Henry B. Carrington im Sommer 1866 ein neues Fort entlang des Bozeman Trails errichtet, stellt dies für den Oglala-Häuptling Red Cloud eine weitere Provokation dar, auf die es nur eine Antwort gibt: Krieg gegen alle weißen Eindringlinge. Der Hass der Oglala richtet sich vor allem gegen die Soldaten in Fort Phil Kearny.

Die Nachricht von den Goldfunden in Montana hat sich wie ein Lauffeuer verbreitet. Aus allen Himmelsrichtungen zieht es abenteuerlustige Pioniere, Goldsucher und Halunken in die Alder Gulch bei Virginia City. Der kürzeste Weg nach Montana führt von Laramie über den Bozeman Trail, mitten durch das Land der Sioux und Cheyennes am Powder River und durch die Black Hills. Die ersten blutigen Auseinandersetzungen haben bereits begonnen.
