Janie Johnson has been on an emotional roller-coaster ride ever since she saw her face on the side of a milk carton. At first she thought the people she called Mom and Dad had kidnapped her. Then she learned they were only trying to protect her. Finally, she had to get acquainted with another whole new family. Now Janie's two families have made peace. But just as her life returns to normal, her Connecticut father suffers a stroke. With her mother reeling from the tragedy, Janie steps in to help manage the family finances.

Michie and her best friend, Trissa, grew up like sisters in a ramshackle duplex owned by their single moms. But now that they're sixteen, their differences in identity and experience have caused a rift. Michie's an introvert obsessed with a book called A Girl's Guide to Murder. Shiny, extroverted Trissa, on the other hand, dances at the hottest nightclub in town. One night, Michie wakes up to find Trissa missing, having left only a cryptic note. The cops write her off as a party girl who's probably already met a foul end, but Michie refuses to believe it.

Tonight, Riverview Theaters is closing forever, the last remaining business in a defunct shopping mall. The moviegoers have left, and Jo and her six coworkers have the final shift, a shift that quickly takes a dark turn. First a stranger arrives with a chilling accusation. Then the power goes out and their manager disappears, along with the keys to the lobby doors and the theater safe, where the crew's phones are locked each shift. The crew's tension turns to terror when Jo discovers the dead body of one of her co-workers.

Poor Clara. On the one hand, things are going well: she’s aced her Math final, and school’s almost out for the year. Dad’s hanging in there with contract jobs, Mom’s helping make ends meet by cleaning other people’s homes, and they’ve at least got a roof over their heads. Vegas isn’t the nicest place in the summer, but it’s no worse than the half-dozen other places she’s lived in her short life. But on the other hand, she has no friends. Everyone at school is either diffident or a bully—as if they can sense that Clara doesn’t quite fit in. And then there are the triplets.
