I den andra delen av två om Sveriges konung Gustav Vasa får vi följa honom under hans sista tredjedel i livet, från 1540 till hans död 1560. Runt 1540 var relationen till Danmark ansträngd samtidigt som missnöjet jäste på flera håll inom riket. Framför allt i Småland där ett bondeuppror, lett av Nils Dacke, startades 1542. Upproret som fick namnet Dackefejden startades eftersom bönderna var förbannade på kungens skattepolitik, kyrkopolitik och centralisering av makten. Så småningom kvästes upproret, Dacke dog i striderna och bönderna fick betala böter till kronan.
