In the stately nineteenth-century homes on Philadelphia’s Delancey Street, the wilder passions scarcely ruffle the peace. Murder is unthinkable, particularly a murder involving an upscale book discussion group, of which schoolteacher Amanda Pepper is a devoted member.

After ten years on the force, LAPD cop Sonny Rush relocates with her elderly mother to peaceful Haven, California, to join her godfather’s burgeoning PI business. What crimes could possibly happen in a town nicknamed “Mayberry by the Sea”? Sonny’s first case: find Figgy, a missing goldendoodle last seen sporting a Versace collar. At least scouting out a dognapper gives Sonny a chance to get to know her new neighbors.

Detective Anna Travis is called out to a motorway service station on the M1, where the body of a young girl has been found in a nearby ditch. With no apparent family, friends or connections, this victim is the latest in a string of women who have gone missing in the vicinity, with no one stepping forward to claim them. As the investigation appears to stall, Anna receives an unexpected letter from a man she helped put away. He asks her to visit him in prison immediately, claiming to know who the killer is.

When a woman is murdered behind the library, Chief Fox realizes the victim was more than she seemed and enlists the aid of Chipping Cheddar’s resident Federal Bureau of Magic agent, Eden Fury. The woman’s death also triggers the arrival of Alcina, a powerful supernatural hellbent on uncovering the killer’s identity and bringing them to justice. Alcina views Eden as her polar opposite on the supernatural scale of good and evil and doesn’t trust her to conduct a proper investigation, no matter what her badge says.

I've only been back home a few weeks and already strange events are happening all over town. Wishes are coming true to the delight of those affected. Despite the seemingly good fortune, I need to put on my federal bureau of magic badge and get to work. I can't let supernatural shenanigans disrupt the natural order of life here, no matter how awesome they seem. When their good luck starts to take a dark turn, I have to kick my efforts into overdrive. Can I crack the case before these dreams-come-true turn into nightmares?

Federal Bureau of Magic Agent Eden Fury spends her days catching demons and returning them to Otherworld where they belong. Well, maybe not all supernaturals. I tend to avoid using my fury traits, but when I reluctantly use my power of invisibility and then can't undo it, I don't know whether the gods are punishing me—or someone else is. At first my condition isn't so bad. I can play well-deserved pranks on my family and aid Chief Fox as a silent observer in town. As time passes, however, it becomes clear that the longer I'm sight unseen, the more clear and present danger I'm in.

I foolishly believed this day would never come, that life in charming Chipping Cheddar would always be pleasant and somewhat predictable—but all good things must come to an end. And it seems the dormant portal is no exception.

The appearance of a strange plant on the Taskers' farm sends Neville and me straight to the Federal Bureau of Magic database, where we discover that deadly demons are snatching bodies all over town. Meanwhile, with the Day of Darkness looming on the calendar, family tensions abound, and I'm reminded, once again, that I'm the white sheep of this black magic family. Can I put a stop to the Stepford invasion before it's too late, or will the demons take up residence in their hosts—permanently?

When a local artist disappears under mysterious circumstances, Chief Fox enlists my help to solve the case. An inspection of the artist's most recent paintings reveals there's magic at work, and I have to get in touch with my inner Rembrandt in order to access it. Meanwhile, life takes a sharp turn for frenemy Sassy Persimmons, and I find myself in the unexpected position of offering her comfort while offering my evil family a piece of my mind.

I'm less than thrilled when the Federal Bureau of Magic sends a training instructor to make sure my skills are up to snuff. Agent Quinn Redmond is an uptight fae with a rigid approach to rules and regulations that even a do-gooder like me finds stifling. When an eerie fog settles over the town, residents begin acting out in response, resulting in overtime hours for Chief Fox and local law enforcement. Things take a deadly turn when one of the residents ends up dead and I worry his death is only the beginning.
