In die Aufbruchstimmung platzt Justus von Ostwald, dem Marlene vor Jahren das Herz brach.

New York, 1941: Als SPD-Abgeordnete wurde Paula Hagedorn nach der Ermordung ihres Mannes durch die Nationalsozialisten schon früh in die Emigration gezwungen. In Amerika gilt sie inzwischen als die gute Seele der politisch Verfolgten, besonders aufgrund ihres Engagements für Not leidende Kinder. Zu ihr flüchtet sich ihre Freundin Marlene von Runstedt, nachdem diese Deutschland über Frankreich, Spanien und Portugal verlassen musste. Marlene schützt nicht nur ihr eigenes Leben, sondern auch das von Lena, der inzwischen erwachsenen Tochter von Sonja Grawitz und Justus von Ostwald.

Apesar disso, o clima na Vila dos Tecidos é de otimismo.
