"10. oktober 680 blev profeten Muhammeds dattersøn, Husajn, myrdet på sletten ved Kerbela syd for Baghdad i det nuværende Irak. For den uortodokse islam, shiismen, blev Husajn den store martyr, hvis tragiske død årligt genfremstilles ved de blodige muharram-passionsspil i det muslimske måneårs først måned. Men også uden for d. 10. muharram ligger skyggen fra Kerbela, mindet om Husajns martyrdød og en følelse af medskyld deri, mørk og tragisk over tilværelsen, som var denne 1300 år gamle begivenhed sket for ganske nylig.
