A Modern Utopia is a 1905 novel by H. G. Wells. Because of the complexity and sophistication of its narrative structure, A Modern Utopia has been called "not so much a modern as a postmodern utopia." The novel is best known for its notion that a voluntary order of nobility known as the Samurai could effectively rule a "kinetic and not static" world state so as to solve "the problem of combining progress with political stability".

When penniless businessman Mr Bedford retreats to the Kent coast to write a play, he meets by chance the brilliant Dr Cavor, an absent-minded scientist on the brink of developing a material that blocks gravity. Cavor soon succeeds in his experiments, only to tell a stunned Bedford the invention makes possible one of the oldest dreams of humanity: a journey to the moon. With Bedford motivated by money, and Cavor by the desire for knowledge, the two embark on the expedition.

The First Men in the Moon, published in 1901, is the gripping tale of man's first journey to the moon, undertaken by one Mr. Bedford, a bankrupt businessman; and the eccentric scientist Mr. Cavor. Here they discover a sophisticated civilization, dominated by an insectlike race they call the Selenites. Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen der Milchstraße und Andromeda ist in ihre entscheidende Phase getreten. Eine Entscheidung bahnt sich an: Hundertfünfzigtausend riesige Roboteinheiten aus Gruelfin, die sogenannten Sammler, materialisieren in der Milchstraße und bedrohen das Solsystem und seine Planeten. Reginald Bull, der älteste Freund Perry Rhodans, stellt sich ihnen mit allem entgegen, was er an Raumschiffen aufzubieten hat. Selbst bisherige Gegner der Menschheit schicken ihre Raumschiffe, um die Invasoren zurückzuschlagen.

Decades before Neal Armstrong took his "giant leap for mankind", two intrepid adventurers from Lympne, England, journeyed there using not a rocket, but an antigravity coating. Mr. Bedford, who narrates the tale, tells of how he fell in with eccentric inventor Mr. Cavor, grew to believe in his research, helped him build a sphere for traveling in space, and then partnered with him in an expedition to the Moon. What they found was fantastic!
