In the small village of Berring, Calder runs the Broken Mug tavern. He was a gifted swordsman and would have been a war hero if only his side had won. While Calder struggles to understand what it means to be an Avatar of Light, he and his party venture out of Berring in hopes of protecting their world from the threat against it.

Dazu nutzt er hauptsächlich die Form der kölschen "Rümcher", die er meisterhaft beherrscht. Aber auch mit seinen Verzällcher, also der freien Erzählform, schafft Häck bei seinen Zuhörern eine besondere Form der Aufmerksamkeit und Neugier.

Mit Hacks durchstreift Gunter Schoß "Märkische Wiesen" und ein "Märkisches Museum", bemächtigt sich der "Kunstformen der Geschichte" und liest schließlich den Freunden der Außenpolitik die Leviten mithilfe von "Zwei Denkwürdigkeiten aus preußischen Feldzügen". So gehen poetische Sichten in Natur und Historie zusammen. Faltenreich bietet sich dem Auge die Erdfläche, und faltenreich erscheint die menschliche Geschichte dem Bewusstsein. Nicht immer ist der Faltenwurf schön, doch schön wird er in seiner Darstellung durch den Dichter.
