In dem verschlafenen englischen Dorf Beacon geschieht ein Mord: der Großgrundbesitzer Oberst Bohun wird erschlagen. Da der Oberst im Dorf viele Feinde hatte, mangelt es nicht an Verdächtigen. Wie gut, dass Pater Brown zufällig in Beacon ist, um dem überforderten Dorfpolizisten bei der Suche nach dem Mörder zu helfen.

Seems the new kingpin, Carmen Rich - with whom Hammer has a violent history - thinks Helen made off with ten mil in skim money courtesy of her late lover, or anyway, so Rich claims.

Wäre da nicht der kleine Priester aus Edenbridge, der das natürlich völlig anders sieht.
