Februar 1685 in Halle an der Saale, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Komponisten des Barock. Bereits früh zeigte sich sein musikalisches Talent, und obwohl sein Vater, ein Wundarzt und Hofchirurg, zunächst keine musikalische Karriere für seinen Sohn vorsah, setzte sich Händel – unterstützt von seiner Mutter – durch. Er erhielt Orgelunterricht bei Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, der ihn in die Werke deutscher und italienischer Komponisten einführte.
