Known as an actor-manager, Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) took complete responsibility for season after season at London’s Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theater. Beginning in 1878, author Bram Stoker worked for Irving as a business manager at the Lyceum for much of Irving’s career. Stoker revered Irving, and when he began writing Dracula, Irving was the chief inspiration for the title character.

In this remarkable anthology of historical recordings are many of the great artists of the past. Early cylinder recordings of Sir Henry Irving preserve the voice and character of the greatest actor of the Victorian period as well as Ellen Terry, his stage partner for many years. In this program, the changing styles of Shakespeare performance, a fascinating study, are documented with such varied actors as Tree, Gielgud, Thorndike, Olivier, Booth, and Barrymore.

Originally produced for Chicago Theatres on the Air, Shakespeare's Greatest Hits contains some of the most memorable scenes from the Bard's most profound works: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, Othello, and many more. It was performed by Chicago's Shakespeare Repertory, including Amy Irving and Kevin Gudhal, in 1993.
