Arguing that global communications have fragmented national cultures and that multiculturalism, intended to reduce social frictions, is today reinforcing them, Sacks argues for a new approach to national identity, making the case for "integrated diversity" within a framework of shared political values. Britain, he argues, will have to construct a national narrative as a basis for identity, reinvigorate the concept of the common good, and identify shared interests among currently conflicting groups.

From the summer of 1938, British women from all walks of life joined the Women's Voluntary Services (WVS). This disparate band of women came together for the common good - to help serve and protect their communities. By 1941 a million women had enrolled. In de negentiende eeuw bracht de zoektocht naar een politieke eenheid zowel culturele inspiratie als politieke onrust en strijd. Na de Frans-Duitse Oorlog, de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog moesten Duitsland en de Duitsers zichzelf opnieuw uitvinden. Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was zonder twijfel één van de merkwaardigste figuren van de Nederlandse geschiedenis.
