Pubblicata per la prima volta su Rassegna Contemporanea nell'agosto del 1911, "I fortunati" è una novella in cui Pirandello critica in maniera molto dura il mondo della chiesa, senza per questo rinunciare alla sua tagliente ironia. Conosciamo così Don Arturo Filomarino, giovane prete del piccolo paesino di Montelusa (paesino immaginario che, molto probabilmente, è Girgenti), che deve fare i conti con una pesantissima eredità.

In questa novella Pirandello continua a scavare nel profondo del nostro inconscio. Dopo la morte della moglie un pover'uomo è distrutto dal dolore, è terrorizzato dal suo futuro e cerca disperatamente di rivivere i momenti felici della sua infanzia, come quando correva a piedi nudi sull'erba. Ma agli occhi del mondo quel gesto sembra soltanto una follia di chi non è più capace di intendere e di volere.

Ne "I pensionati della memoria" Pirandello offre all'ascoltatore una soluzione all'inevitabile vertigine che colpisce chi raggiunge la consapevolezza dell'assurdità della vita.
