Venerato nel più rigido segreto e conosciuto nella sua reale natura solo dai maggiori dignitari dell'ordine, il telo era conservato nel tesoro centrale dei Templari, che avevano fama di essere autorità nel campo delle reliquie. In un'epoca di confusione dottrinale per la Chiesa, la sindone per i Templari poteva essere un potente antidoto contro la diffusione delle eresie.

Il rogo del 18 marzo 1314 decretò la fine di Giacomo di Molay, ultimo Gran Maestro Templare, ma non cancellò affatto il ricordo di un potente ordine monastico-cavalleresco nato nel XII secolo per la difesa dei pellegrini che giungevano in Terrasanta e che con il tempo aveva accumulato un potere enorme, giungendo ad occupare un ruolo chiave nella Cristianità dell'epoca.

Giovanni Paolo II è il solo papa del Novecento che può vantare una vittoria politica, quella nel confronto con il sistema comunista. Eppure il suo è un pontificato religioso. Non è l'unico rifiuto. Più volte Francesco cerca di far approvare una regola per il proprio ordine e più volte gli viene negato.
