Nach einem Richtfest radelt die Bestatterin Gitte Madsen beschwipst nach Hause, mit den Gedanken immer noch bei dem Richtspruch, der leider ganz schön schiefgegangen ist. Ein schlechtes Omen, sagen die einen, doch Gitte hält nichts von Aberglauben - bis sie über eine Leiche stolpert und im Graben landet. Gitte erkennt den Toten sofort: Es ist der Polier August Borg. An seinem Hals sind Würgemale. Als ihr Bestattungsinstitut mit der Beerdigung beauftragt wird, fühlt sich Gitte berufen und stellt sehr zum Unmut von Kommissar Ole Ansgaard ihre eigenen Nachforschungen an.

Eigentlich möchte Frau Maier, die mit ihrer Katze in einem kleinen Haus am Chiemsee wohnt, nur ihre Ruhe haben. Eigentlich. Doch als in ihrer Nachbarschaft seltsame Dinge geschehen und auch noch ein Gast aus dem nahegelegenen Kurhotel verschwindet, ist es mit der Ruhe vorbei. Frau Maier will den Dingen auf den Grund gehen und macht dabei eine grausige Entdeckung. Sie ahnt allerdings nicht, dass der Täter sie schon längst ins Visier genommen hat.

Frau Maier lebt mit ihrer Katze in einem kleinen Haus am Chiemsee. Eigentlich ist die ältere Dame die Ruhe in Person. Doch als sie an einem ganz normalen Montagmorgen eine Frauenleiche am Ufer findet, ist nichts mehr so, wie es war: Ein nächtlicher Besucher schleicht um ihr Haus und hinterlässt unheimliche Nachrichten, die Schwester der Ermordeten wird bedroht und eine weitere Leiche lässt nicht lange auf sich warten. Weil die Polizei sie für senil hält, ermittelt Frau Maier auf eigene Faust und bringt sich dabei in höchste Gefahr.
