Wer Theodor Storm vor allem mit dem windzerzausten Schimmelreiter in Verbindung bringt, wird hier noch eine ganz andere Seite des berühmten Realisten kennenlernen: Oft geht es um die unerfüllte Liebe - die Liebe, die nicht sein kann oder darf, weil beispielsweise der Altersunterschied zu groß ist oder andere Hindernisse dem Glück in den Weg treten. Doch davon wird die Energie, die aus den Gedichten spricht, in keinerlei Hinsicht getrübt. Storm selbst hielt jedenfalls seine Lyrik für gelungener als seine weitaus bekannteren Novellen.
