Decades of data cannot be ignored: African-American adults are far more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than white adults. In a rousing indictment of the idea that notions of biological race should drive scientific inquiry, Sweetness in the Blood provides an ethnographic picture of biotechnology's framings of Type 2 diabetes risk and race and, importantly, offers a critical examination of the assumptions behind the recruitment of African American and African-descent populations for Type 2 diabetes research.

On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. On September 13, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed 39 men - hostages as well as prisoners.

A true crime podcast wrapped in a love letter to my adopted home of Austin, Texas.A place I’ve been blessed to call home for a quarter century. I’ve always been open to new adventures in a city affectionately nicknamed “The World’s Largest Night Club,” as evidenced by my collection of laugh lines, heartbreaks, broken bones, and questionable credit reports.I’ve tried many times to write a memoir detailing my love affair with this place. I’d get a few interesting anecdotes on the page, but would lack the connective tissue, the coherent plot line that ties things together and keeps ...

Story0
Crushed by the Romans in the first century A.D., the ancient Druids of Britain left almost no reliable evidence behind. Historian Ronald Hutton shows how this lack of definite information has allowed succeeding British generations to reimagine, reinterpret, and reinvent the Druids. Hutton's captivating book is the first to encompass two thousand years of Druid history and to explore the evolution of English, Scottish, and Welsh attitudes toward the forever ambiguous figures of the ancient Celtic world.
