1914. Mining engineer Tommy Birch goes off to war, leaving his new wife, Rita, behind in Pontefract. Giovanni Lonardi era un emigrante veronese che viveva in Svizzera. Nell'aprile del 1915, tornato per un breve soggiorno in Italia, è stato arruolato e spedito al fronte. Lascia così moglie e tre bimbe a carico dei suoi poveri e vecchi genitori. Capita in un reggimento tra i più martoriati del fronte e scampa alla morte molte volte quasi per miracolo. Nel 1917 durante una rischiosa missione è fatto prigioniero e viene internato in un campo di prigionia in Austria.
